Studying High Technician Efficiency Energy
My name is Mario, and I’m currently studying High Technician Efficiency Energy at IES POLITÉCNICO in Seville, where I also live nearby. This field focuses on energy-efficient solutions such as solar panels and heat pumps. While in the Netherlands, I have worked on solar panel installations, mostly for private homes with both flat and sloped roofs. This has been a great opportunity to apply the knowledge I’ve gained at school to real-world projects.
My Journey to the Netherlands
Coming to the Netherlands was an amazing experience. MAATT arranged everything — my flight, my contact with the school, and even my first pickup at the airport. My contact person welcomed me and brought me to my temporary accommodation, which was located near the MAATT headquarters. At the MAATT office, we started with a hands-on training in their test and training centre. This was a great introduction before starting the actual job.
Training at the MAATT Test & Training Centre
Before we began working in the field, we received a PowerPoint presentation on solar installations and the different systems we would be working with. We also learned how to work safely. Then we moved on to the practical part. Together with Jeroen — our trainer — we practiced installing solar panels on both flat and sloped roofs. At my scho ol, there’s no space to practice like this, so it was very useful to gain real experience before going to the first project. Thanks to the training, I was well prepared for my first client assignment. For example, I didn’t know how to build a scaffold before, but after the training I was able to do it myself. From day one, I could work independently without much help from my colleagues.

Housing and transport
In the first days after arriving, we stayed in a temporary house close to the MAATT office. After finishing our training, we moved into our permanent accommodation, which was near the job site. The housing was good and well-arranged. We also have a company car, so we can drive ourself to the project.
Working for the client
I’m currently working in a friendly team. Max, who is about the same age as I am, and Roel, an experienced electrician, are both great colleagues. I’ve learned a lot from them. Dutch people are interesting and very helpful. They often give me tips and remind me to stay safe — which is important when working with solar panels, since the work can sometimes be dangerous.
My experience with MAATT
What stands out to me is that the people at MAATT always smile, they are supportive and helpful, and they check in regularly to ask how things are going. They also took care of me when something went wrong — once, my bike was stolen, and they gave me another one right away.
They also make sure everything is arranged well: we received our pay on time, even in situations where it wasn’t strictly necessary. That showed me they genuinely care about us. On top of that, they provided housing and a company car.
